Social constructionism

Social constructionism is a theory of knowledge in sociology and communication theory that examines the development of jointly-constructed understandings of the world that form the basis for shared assumptions about reality. The theory centers on the notion that meanings are developed in coordination with others rather than separately within each individual. Social constructs can be different based on the society and the events surrounding the time period in which they exist. There are weak and strong social constructs. A social construct or construction is the meaning, notion, or connotation placed on an object or event by a society, and adopted by the inhabitants of that society with respect to how they view or deal with the object or event.

The Nelson and Narens Journal of Verbal Learning and Verbal Behavior —, general knowledge norms have been valuable to researchers in many fields. Thus, we updated the norms and expanded them by providing new measures. In particular, we report two new metacognitive measures confidence judgments and peer judgments and provide a detailed report of commission errors. Each of these measures will be valuable to researchers, and together they are likely to facilitate future research in a number of fields, such as research investigating memory illusions, metamemory processes, and error correction. The presence of substantial generational shifts from to necessitates the use of updated norms.

By Dr. Saul McLeod , updated Group pressure may take different forms, for example bullying, persuasion, teasing, criticism, etc. Conformity is also known as majority influence or group pressure. Jenness was the first psychologist to study conformity.

Tacit knowledge

Tacit knowledge or implicit knowledge as opposed to formal, codified or explicit knowledge is the kind of knowledge that is difficult to transfer to another person by means of writing it down or verbalizing it. For example, that London is in the United Kingdom is a piece of explicit knowledge that can be written down, transmitted, and understood by a recipient. However, the ability to speak a language, ride a bicycle, knead dough, play a musical instrument, or design and use complex equipment requires all sorts of knowledge which is not always known explicitly, even by expert practitioners, and which is difficult or impossible to explicitly transfer to other people. The term tacit knowing or tacit knowledge is attributed to Michael Polanyi in in Personal Knowledge. In his later work The Tacit Dimension he made the assertion that "we can know more than we can tell. While this concept made most of its impact on philosophy of science, education and knowledge management — all fields involving humans — for Polanyi it was also a means to show our evolutionary continuity with animals.

Over the course of human history, people have developed many interconnected and validated ideas about the physical, biological, psychological, and social worlds. Those ideas have enabled successive generations to achieve an increasingly comprehensive and reliable understanding of the human species and its environment. The means used to develop these ideas are particular ways of observing, thinking, experimenting, and validating. These ways represent a fundamental aspect of the nature of science and reflect how science tends to differ from other modes of knowing. It is the union of science, mathematics, and technology that forms the scientific endeavor and that makes it so successful. Although each of these human enterprises has a character and history of its own, each is dependent on and reinforces the others. Accordingly, the first three chapters of recommendations draw portraits of science, mathematics, and technology that emphasize their roles in the scientific endeavor and reveal some of the similarities and connections among them.

Social norms are regarded as collective representations of acceptable group conduct as well as individual perceptions of particular group conduct. In the field of social psychology, the roles of norms are emphasized—which can guide behavior in a certain situation or environment as "mental representations of appropriate behavior". A message can target the former dimension by describing high levels of voter turnout in order to encourage more turnout. Norms also can be changed contingent on the observed behavior of others how much behavior is exhibited. Social norms can be thought of as: "rules that prescribe what people should and should not do given their social surroundings" known as milieu, sociocultural context and circumstances.

Introducing Constructivism in International Relations Theory
