Models for Probability and Statistical Inference: Theory and Applications

Difficulties in learning and thus teaching statistical inference are well reported in the literature. We argue the problem emanates not only from the way in which statistical inference is taught but also from what exactly is taught as statistical inference. What makes statistical inference difficult to understand is that it contains two logics that operate in opposite directions. There is a certain logic in the construction of the inference framework, and there is another in its application. The logic of construction commences from the population, reaches the sample through some steps and then comes back to the population by building and using the sampling distribution.

It seems that you're in Germany. We have a dedicated site for Germany. This book is in two volumes, and is intended as a text for introductory courses in probability and statistics at the second or third year university level. A good background in freshman calculus is sufficient for most of the material presented. Several starred sections have been included as supplementary material.

The book, written by Larry Wasserman, is meant to be an introduction to, and overview of, general statistics. From the book's website:. This book covers a much wider range of topics than a typical introductory text on mathematical statistics. It includes modern topics like nonparametric curve estimation, bootstrapping and classification, topics that are usually relegated to follow-up courses.

An Introduction to Probability and Statistical Inference, Second Edition, guides you through probability models and statistical methods and helps you to think critically about various concepts. Written by award-winning author George Roussas, this book introduces readers with no prior knowledge in probability or statistics to a thinking process to help them obtain the best solution to a posed question or situation. It provides a plethora of examples for each topic discussed, giving the reader more experience in applying statistical methods to different situations. This text contains an enhanced number of exercises and graphical illustrations where appropriate to motivate the reader and demonstrate the applicability of probability and statistical inference in a great variety of human activities. Reorganized material is included in the statistical portion of the book to ensure continuity and enhance understanding.

Statistical inference is the process of using data analysis to infer properties of an underlying distribution of probability. It is assumed that the observed data set is sampled from a larger population. Inferential statistics can be contrasted with descriptive statistics. Descriptive statistics is solely concerned with properties of the observed data, and it does not rest on the assumption that the data come from a larger population. In machine learning , the term inference is sometimes used instead to mean "make a prediction, by evaluating an already trained model"; [2] in this context inferring properties of the model is referred to as training or learning rather than inference , and using a model for prediction is referred to as inference instead of prediction ; see also predictive inference. Statistical inference makes propositions about a population, using data drawn from the population with some form of sampling.
