What’s the Difference between Open-Die Forging and Closed-Die Forging?
Open die forging is the process of deforming a piece of metal between multiple dies that do not completely enclose the material. Products formed through open forging often need secondary machining and refining to achieve the tolerances required for the finished specifications. Custom shapes can also be produced with open die forging. The strength of the grain structure will be increased during the deformation process due to the repeated working of the steel billet. Besides, voids could be effectively reduced after open die forging. For some special shapes, second forging operation is required to reach final shapes and dimensions.
Open Die Forging
Forging is the process of shaping metal through the application of force. Open-die forging is also known smith forging. In open-die forging, a hammer strikes and deforms the workpiece, which is placed on a stationary anvil. Open-die forging gets its name from the fact that the dies the surfaces that are in contact with the workpiece do not enclose the workpiece, allowing it to flow except where contacted by the dies. Therefore the operator needs to orient and position the workpiece to get the desired shape. The dies are usually flat in shape, but some have a specially shaped surface for specialized operations. Open Die Forging Process
