Efforts to promote and operationalize sustainability research have intensified in recent years. Sustainability is a broad research field, in which the objects of focus are the complex sustainability challenges facing humanity e. To fulfill these ambitions, it is argued that the processes of knowledge production for sustainability should be interdisciplinary or even transdisciplinary, making these approaches cornerstones of the field.

The aim is inspired by a fear that science is losing its autonomy to political and economic interests, a development he believes makes science "dangerous. The book concludes with a discussion of reflexivity, where he claims to apply the same critique to himself that he earlier applies to the "new sociology of science. Before addressing the substantive aim of the book, it is necessary to say a word about his terminology. When he speaks of "logicism" he is referring to the epistemological tradition associated with the Vienna Circle in the s, particularly that espoused by its exiles to America, such as Rudolf Carnap and Hans Reichenbach, and currently known as "analytic philosophy.

These implications are important for understanding the structure of scientific endeavor, and for researchers in other fields to see the reflexive nature of scientific research. This article is about the role of context in the creation and exploration of our experience. I give a point of view on the nature of objective knowledge by placing it in the context of reflexivity and eigenform. Mathematics and cybernetics are both fundamentally concerned with the structure of distinctions, but there can be no definition of a distinction without circularity, since such a definition would itself be a distinction. The article proceeds by explicating the structure of reflexive domains D where the transformations of the domain are in one-to-one correspondence with the domain itself.

In this new book he embarks on a sociological analysis of science and its legitimacy. Bourdieu argues thatMoreOne of the worlds leading social thinkers, Bourdieus work has become increasingly influential throughout the social sciences and humanities. Bourdieu argues that that emergence of the social sciences has had the effect of calling in to question the objectivity and validity of scientific activity, by relating it to its historic conditions. It is this relativistic and at times nihilistic interpretation of science that Bourdieu sets out to challenge, in an attempt to combine an accurate vision of the scientific arena with a realist theory of knowledge. The book also offers an elaboration of Bourdieus notion of the scientific field and uses it to address a range of issues and debates in the natural and social sciences.

Calls for greater public engagement with science PES are widespread, but there appears to be little agreement on the meaning and purpose of engagement across the various actors calling for it. This reflects a persistent gulf between PES scholars and scientists communicating with the public. We argue that direct engagement between PES scholars and scientist-communicators could, by facilitating greater reflexivity, lead to a step-change in the calibre and clarity of activities that are designed to support enhanced public engagement with science and technology. In this paper, we, as authors beginning from different perspectives, explore the potential of, and barriers to, a conversation between critical social scientists and members of the science community about public engagement. We then explore what reflexivity might mean for PES and argue for three important foci: political-economic context or politics of the field; institutional context; and personal assumptions.
