Based on the autobiographical novel of the same name by Israeli author Amos Oz , it takes place in Jerusalem in the last years of Mandatory Palestine and the first years of independent Israel, and stars Amir Tessler as Oz, and Gilad Kahana and Portman as his parents. His parents are Ashkenazi Jews who have immigrated to Jerusalem. Amos' mother finds life difficult because Jerusalem is a desert, because her family lives in Tel Aviv , and because communication with them is difficult.

Amos Oz was an Israeli author, journalist and intellectual. He also served on the faculty of literature at Ben-Gurion University. From on, he lived with his family in the southern town of Arad. Oz later studied philosophy and literature at the Hebrew University in Jerusalem. After graduating, Oz was a visiting fellow at Oxford University, author-in-residence at the Hebrew University and writer-in-residence at Colorado College.
There is no simple way to tell the story, and Ms. Portman speaks fluently — and preferring nuances of mood and memory to details of plot. Before he was the acclaimed writer Amos Oz, the narrator and protagonist was Amos Klausner, born in Jerusalem in to parents who had escaped the accelerating horror of Europe. Torn between pride and skepticism, idealism and disappointment, they are at once actors in a sweeping international story and guinea pigs in a risky political experiment. The world she left behind is imagined as a lush, shadowed, fairy-tale environment, a stark contrast to the dry, sun-bleached reality of a fledgling modern nation. She ended up instead with a Lithuanian-born literary critic, Arieh Gilad Kahana , whose nerdiness verges on caricature.
The book has been translated into 28 languages and over a million copies have been sold worldwide. In , a bootleg Kurdish translation was found in a bookstore in northern Iraq. Oz was reportedly delighted. The book documents much of Oz's early life, and includes a family history researched by an uncle of his father. It describes a number of events he previously hadn't communicated.

Some time in the night between Saturday and Sunday the fifth and sixth of January, , Amos Oz's mother ended her life in her sister's flat on Ben Yehuda Street in Tel Aviv, overdosing on medication prescribed to treat her depression. In the newspapers, a debate was raging about whether Israel should demand and accept reparations from Germany. The pragmatic left thought that Germany should pay the cost that Israel would have to bear to absorb the survivors, while the right declared it was immoral to sell absolution in exchange for tainted lucre. A couple of years later, Oz, by then 15, broke with his right-wing father and went, by himself, to live on a kibbutz. Oz's memoir, A Tale of Love and Darkness, thought to be the biggest-selling literary work in Israeli history, is an exploration of why his mother killed herself, and the effect on him, a sensitive, intelligent boy growing up in Jerusalem during the last years of the British mandate and the war of independence. It is one of the funniest, most tragic and most touching books I have ever read.
