The graduate courses that make up the program create an interdisciplinary point of view, and are taught by professors from all three schools. Studio classes accompany classroom studies, providing creative and analytical approaches, and shifting students between rigorous, technical and explorative processes in the development of both experiential and theoretical knowledge. Collaborative team projects and student-driven independent projects complement the core courses to give students both a solid grasp of the fundamentals and a deep understanding of the nuances of these fields.

A Comprehensive Guide To Product Design

Provides an integrated and cohesive view of the product design process, covering materials, manufacturing, idea generation, computer-aided design, engineering functions, product types, and market research. This updated edition explores recent developments such as additive manufacture and crowd funding, and includes more consumer and lifestyle orientated products for a more product-based focus, supported by a range of new innovative examples and case studies from internationally-renown designers and studios. The second edition also features a supportive document map that helps to reveal the steps in product creation, new projects and activities for every chapter, and additional references and web sources to allow students to further explore the world of product design. Full of inspiring images covering a wide variety of product design examples, Richard Morris presents an engaging introduction to this sizeable topic that can be used as a useful guide to the processes involved in product design. Moreover, only one of the chapters in Part 4 Chapter 15 really addresses organizational issues. Given the importance of this class of issues, it would have been nice to see more emphasis in this area. In summary, I do not think the book achieves the goal it sets for itself to appeal to both researchers and practitioners alike since most of the chapters are not deep enough to satisfy researchers, nor detailed enough in pragmatic recommendations to satisfy practitioners. However, readers who would like to get some initial pointers into the literature on human factors in nuclear safety will find this book to be a good starting place.

A design is a plan or specification for the construction of an object or system or for the implementation of an activity or process, or the result of that plan or specification in the form of a prototype , product or process. The verb to design expresses the process of developing a design. In some cases, the direct construction of an object without an explicit prior plan such as in craftwork, some engineering, coding, and graphic design may also be considered to be a design activity. The design usually has to satisfy certain goals and constraints, may take into account aesthetic, functional, economic, or socio-political considerations, and is expected to interact with a certain environment. Major examples of designs include architectural blueprints , engineering drawings , business processes , circuit diagrams , and sewing patterns. The person who produces a design is called a designer , which is a term generally used for people who work professionally in one of the various design areas—usually specifying which area is being dealt with such as a fashion designer , product designer , web designer or interior designer , but also others such as architects and engineers. A designer's sequence of activities is called a design process, possibly using design methods.
