Software development process

The system development life cycle, known as the SDLC, is the industry-standard approach to managing phases of an engineering project. Think of it as the equivalent to the scientific method for software development and other IT initiatives. The common breakdown of the SDLC includes seven phases that trace a product or project from a planned idea to its final release into operation and maintenance. There is flexibility within the SDLC. In recent decades a number of different models and methods have gained popularity.

In software engineering , a software development process is the process of dividing software development work into distinct phases to improve design , product management , and project management. It is also known as a software development life cycle SDLC. The methodology may include the pre-definition of specific deliverables and artifacts that are created and completed by a project team to develop or maintain an application. Most modern development processes can be vaguely described as agile. Other methodologies include waterfall , prototyping , iterative and incremental development , spiral development , rapid application development , and extreme programming. A life-cycle "model" is sometimes considered a more general term for a category of methodologies and a software development "process" a more specific term to refer to a specific process chosen by a specific organization. The field is often considered a subset of the systems development life cycle.

The IFIP series publishes state-of-the-art results in the sciences and technologies of information and communication. The scope of the series includes: foundations of computer science; software theory and practice; education; computer applications in technology; communication systems; systems modeling and optimization; information systems; computers and society; computer systems technology; security and protection in information processing systems; artificial intelligence; and human-computer interaction. Proceedings and post-proceedings of referred international conferences in computer science and interdisciplinary fields are featured. These results often precede journal publication and represent the most current research. The principal aim of the IFIP series is to encourage education and the dissemination and exchange of information about all aspects of computing.
