The Social Structures of the Economy, Pierre Bourdieu, Cambridge: Polity Press, 2005

Pierre Bourdieu, one of the most influential critical social theorists of the second half of the twentieth century, once described sociology as "a combat sport. Political Interventions includes many texts hitherto unavailable in English and, placing them in their historical context, reconstructs Bourdieu's vision of academic study and political activism as two sides of the same process: the decoding and critique of social reality in order to transform it. There is a famous line in Lenin saying that "without revolutionary theory there can be no revolutionary movement. Theory serves for two things: to join together struggles that are apparently unrelated, and also as a compass in periods of crisis. It is what tells you whether in this precise moment you should be smashing up banks or standing in elections.

For Merleau-Ponty and Bourdieu, thinking is a social and political activity and must be understood as embodied, as taking place in a social context, and as having political effects. Following their work, this article shows how both phenomenology and the social sciences, in order to give a complete account of human reality, must recognize the distance reflection creates between thought and practical existence to reach the ontological, social, and political meaning of both kinds of experiences. Their explanations of the embodiment of society in individuals and of the materiality of thinking offer an alternative to ontological difference they criticize in Heidegger. This study of Merleau-Ponty and Bourdieu serves to lay the bases for a critical phenomenology as an attitude that can be adopted in the context of either discipline, but also to defend the position that thinking is always a way to find ourselves in others and others in ourselves. We take on the existing movement of interrogation of the world, but in doing so we break with the evidences of daily life. The problem does not consist in leaving and finding the proper manner to return to the cave. It consists in resisting fictions of this kind, be they new or as old as our traditions of thinking; in avoiding the re-creation of the kind of insurmountable distinctions that philosophy has attempted to overcome — including the distinction between ourself, our body, and our society.

REVIEW: Political Interventions: Social science and political action, by Pierre Bourdieu

Bourdieu's work was primarily concerned with the dynamics of power in society, especially the diverse and subtle ways in which power is transferred and social order is maintained within and across generations. In conscious opposition to the idealist tradition of much of Western philosophy , his work often emphasized the corporeal nature of social life and stressed the role of practice and embodiment in social dynamics. Bourdieu was a prolific author, producing hundreds of articles and three dozen books, nearly all of which are now available in English. His best known book is Distinction: A Social Critique of the Judgment of Taste , in which he argues that judgments of taste are related to social position, or more precisely, are themselves acts of social positioning. The argument is put forward by an original combination of social theory and data from quantitative surveys, photographs and interviews, in an attempt to reconcile difficulties such as how to understand the subject within objective structures. In the process, Bourdieu attempts to reconcile the influences of both external social structures and subjective experience on the individual.

Pierre Bourdieu

His work, and that of Michel Foucault , is amongst the most frequently cited of the late twentieth-century social theorists. New generations of researchers have continued to look to him see, for example, Thatcher et. The concepts he marshals shed considerable light, for example, on the dynamics at work for educators and pedagogues. Schooling, academic institutions and local structures were of great interest to him. As well as deepening our understanding, they can help us to develop practice.
