With the traditional approach to international security stemming from a Realist, state-centric focus, and being developed with the rise of Strategy Studies during the Cold War, it is clear that the emphasis on power politics and military security has dominated the field of Security Studies in the last century. With this in mind, it is important to assess the value of Peace Studies in the twenty-first century, and the relevance of its agenda as a response to the challenges to international security. As the nature and impact of conflict has evolved in recent decades, particularly in a globalised context, it becomes necessary to understand how an alternative perception of peace and war can provide balance to the debate surrounding stability and security. This essay, then, will begin with a brief background to Peace Studies, summarising its origins and evolution in becoming a recognised academic field.

Based on the assumption that understanding theories and their evolution, and knowing how to locate specific analytical tools within the broader history of given disciplines, is key to understanding current contemporary dynamics of conflict, this course does not introduce students to the whole array of peace and conflict studies.

Rather, it provides students with a number of case studies, both thematic and country-related, with the aim of 1 introducing students to different levels and types of analysis on conflicts; 2 testing the relevance and application of specific analytical tools to given topics and situations and 3 emphasizing the transformation, circulation and legitimation of knowledge on conflicts, including violent collective strife, from scholarship to policy sectors, and its articulation with the evolution of the modalities of outside interventions and the possibilities of conflict resolution.

Students will also meet with the Teaching Assistant for an additional one-hour tutorial. Attendance at lectures and tutorials is mandatory. Scholarly articles will be placed on blackboard. You are strongly advised to visit it frequently. Important administrative and other announcements will be posted on it regularly, and it will also feature links to documents and readings required for the course.

Will Greaves, your TA, will keep office hours throughout the term -he will announce the schedule during your first tutorial. If you cannot see Will during office hours, you may make an appointment to meet with him. For all other queries, please use email. This will include familiarity with the required readings as well as depth of analysis. You will be able to get bonus points for doing so. Maximum bonus is 2.

Students are expected to attend them regularly and to actively participate in discussions. Tutorials provide a forum in which students discuss the lectures, readings, movies, journalistic and literary accounts in great depth. They allow a space for exploring different narratives and different ways of conceiving of conflict, peace and justice. They are also designed to help you complete your assignments and to prepare for examinations. The grade will be calculated based on your record of attendance, and the quality and quantity of your participation.

This assessment will reflect each student's preparation for class, her attentiveness to and involvement in tutorial discussions and the degree to which her involvement reflects a careful and perceptive understanding of the issues under discussion. You do not have to account for absences; but if you do not attend, you WILL receive zero grade. Students are required to sign up for tutorials via blackboard. This exercise tests your capacity to work in a team, to research a given topic and present your arguments in a limited time oral presentation and length 4 pages maximum.

Each group will comprise about 5 students, only two of which will be asked to make the presentation. The whole group is to hand in a written hand-out of 4 pages maximum double-spaced, printed and stapled , to be distributed to the whole class at the beginning of the class. The hand-out must include a detailed outline, with a summary of your arguments, and a bibliography. To ensure fairness the whole group will be awarded the same grade. You will pick one topic for presentation on Week 1.

You will find useful references for the presentations in the additional readings for each week, but are required to do research on your own. Be aware that the group presentations and ensuing debates are an integral part of the lecture and may be included in your mid-term examination. You may also use them for your written assignments. Take careful notes during the presentation and also during the debate: during the debate, I will ask one or several students to react to the presentation. How would you have answered to the question?

In your PCJ classes this year, you will be required to write a blog post for a mark. Once you get your mark and feedback on your post, feel free to send them to the Director, Prof. Wendy Wong, at wendyh. Students will be contacted before any of their work is posted online.

By submitting your post to the Director, you are consenting to have your work posted on the Trudeau Centre website, Twitter account, and other related venues for the purposes of showcasing your work. You do not have to contribute to our blog, nor should you feel obligated to. However, if you turn in a piece, you should also not have the expectation that it will certainly be published. The Director will be selecting posts that best reflect the multiple perspectives present in our program.

All submissions must be properly researched, cited, and adopt a professional voice. Pieces submitted will be treated like submissions to a newspaper. It's fair to expect there will be copy editing, and in some instances, cuts to be more consumable as an online article. Our hope is to keep an archive of great pieces online even after you leave the program -giving you the opportunity to show published writing to a future employer. The choice of topics is yours as long as it is original work and it revolves around the following question: What are the peace, conflict, or justice issues that you find most pressing in our world today?

In words about two double-spaced pages , make a case for why people should care about your issue. You may use normative or empirical evidence to support your claim. What would happen if we neglected the issue? You will be required to sign up on Week 2 on what week you wish to submit your blog post.

You are encouraged to think of a topic, discuss it with myself and Will, and submit it early in the semester to get feedback, and edit your piece if you wish to submit it for contribution to the blog. You are to submit this assignment at the beginning of Week 7. You are to hand in printed copies; electronic submission will not be accepted.

The critical reading submission is to be 5 pages long, double-spaced, printed on both sides of the page and stapled. Pick the week of your choice on Week 2. This exercise aims at developing your skills at critical reflection, reading and writing, so this should not be a simple description of the content of the readings: you have to engage with the material analytically.

How do the readings relate to each other? Have these approaches been put into practice, with what implications? What challenges do they raise? You are encouraged to base your arguments on examples of case-studies, current affairs, etc. The choice of book s for review, question and details will be distributed in Week 5 in class and on blackboard. Each book review is to be 5 pages long, double-spaced, printed on both sides of the page and stapled.

Approval is contingent on proper medical documentation. Multiple assignments or tests coming due at the same time are not grounds for extensions -please plan your work accordingly. Students will not be allowed to hand in work that was due during the semester after the end of the semester. Please familiarize yourself with office hours and ensure that your work is date stamped when received by the receptionist.

If late work is NOT date-stamped, your penalty will be calculated up to the date your TA receives the paper. Students are strongly advised to keep rough and draft work and hard copies of their assignments before handing their paper in.

These should be kept until the marked assignments have been returned. Students must keep their returned and graded assignments until final marks have been posted on ROSI at the end of the year in case there is any discrepancy or problem in the recording of final grades.

It also provides a short history on how the peacebuilding field has evolved, compares and contrasts different definitions for peacebuilding and lays out scientific research that supports peacebuilding work. PACS is a survey course that introduces students to the central issues and concepts associated with the interdisciplinary field of peace, conflict, and security studies or what we call PACS here at CU Boulder. As a scholarly field, PACS attempts to understand the factors that give rise to acts of collective violence and that enshrine the place of militarism within societies.

It remains a unique and enduring principle that binds its members together, committing them to protect each other and setting a spirit of solidarity within the Alliance. NATO constantly reviews and transforms its policies, capabilities and structures to ensure that it can continue to address current and future challenges to the freedom and security of its members. Presently, Allied forces are required to carry out a wide range of missions across several continents; the Alliance needs to ensure that its armed forces remain modern, deployable, and capable of sustained operations. Many of the challenges NATO faces require cooperation with other stakeholders in the international community. Over more than 25 years, the Alliance has developed a network of partnerships with non-member countries from the Euro-Atlantic area, the Mediterranean and the Gulf region, and other partners across the globe.
