Principles of igneous and metamorphic petrology
Petrology has three subdivisions: igneous, metamorphic, and sedimentary petrology. Igneous and metamorphic petrology are commonly taught together because they both contain heavy use of chemistry , chemical methods, and phase diagrams. Sedimentary petrology is, on the other hand, commonly taught together with stratigraphy because it deals with the processes that form sedimentary rock. Lithology was once approximately synonymous with petrography , but in current usage, lithology focuses on macroscopic hand-sample or outcrop-scale description of rocks while petrography is the speciality that deals with microscopic details. In the petroleum industry , lithology , or more specifically mud logging , is the graphic representation of geological formations being drilled through, and drawn on a log called a mud log. Petrology utilizes the fields of mineralogy , petrography , optical mineralogy , and chemical analysis to describe the composition and texture of rocks.
Introduction to Mineralogy and Petrology presents the essentials of both disciplines through an approach accessible to industry professionals, academic researchers, and students. Mineralogy and petrology stand as the backbone of the geosciences. Detailed knowledge of minerals and rocks and the process of formation and association are essential for practicing professionals and advanced students. This book is designed as an accessible, step-by-step guide to exploring, retaining, and implementing the core concepts of mineral and hydrocarbon exploration, mining, and extraction. Each topic is fully supported by working examples, diagrams and full-color images. The book is primarily aimed at economic geologists, mineralogists, petrologists, professional researchers, and government and private institution professionals.
Teaching Petrology Using the Primary Scientific Literature
Metamorphic rocks arise from the transformation of existing rock to new types of rock, in a process called metamorphism. During this process, the rock remains mostly in the solid state, but gradually recrystallizes to a new texture or mineral composition. They may be formed simply by being deeply buried beneath the Earth's surface, where they are subject to high temperatures and the great pressure of the rock layers above. They can also form from tectonic processes such as continental collisions, which cause horizontal pressure, friction and distortion. Metamorphic rock can be formed locally when rock is heated by the intrusion of hot molten rock called magma from the Earth's interior. The study of metamorphic rocks now exposed at the Earth's surface following erosion and uplift provides information about the temperatures and pressures that occur at great depths within the Earth's crust.

Microtextures of Igneous and Metamorphic Rocks
Use readings from the primary literature to: provide a historical perspective of our science; promote critical thinking; help students develop analytical and synthetic thinking; demonstrate applications of modern scientific methods and techniques; and prepare students to begin to contribute to our scientific heritage. Many of us use the primary literature in our courses. However, students particularly undergraduates need some guidance in learning how to mine the information in professional scientific writings. Here are a few examples of different approaches one can take in teaching students how to read journal articles.

This concise textbook, written specifically for one-semester undergraduate courses, provides students with the key information they need to understand these processes. Topics are organized around the types of rocks to expect in a given tectonic environment, rather than around rock classifications: this is much more interesting and engaging for students, as it applies petrology to real geologic environments. This textbook includes over illustrations and …mehr.

American Mineralogist ;; 7 : Essentials of Igneous and Metamorphic Petrology , which is easy to recommend, is presented in a concise and compelling manner. The book is about pages and is subdivided into eighteen chapters that convey the fundamental principles that govern the mineralogy of igneous and metamorphic rocks. The authors, B. Ronald Frost and Carol D. Frost, each have a strong track record in these fields.

Rocks and minerals are all around us! They help us to develop new technologies and are used in our everyday lives. Our use of rocks and minerals includes as building material, cosmetics, cars, roads, and appliances. In order maintain a healthy lifestyle and strengthen the body, humans need to consume minerals daily. Rocks and minerals play a valuable role in natural systems such as providing habitat like the cliffs at Grand Canyon National Park where endangered condors nest, or provide soil nutrients in Redwood where the tallest trees in the world grow. Rocks and minerals are important for learning about earth materials, structure, and systems.
