The Global Positioning System serves 1 billion civil users with applications including: navigation for cars, aircraft, ships, spacecraft, pedestrians, and emergency services; time transfer for telecommunications, finance, and power delivery; and a breadth of scientific uses. Cognizant of this utility, the Russians are rejuvenating their satellite navigation system, and new systems are being fielded by China, Europe, India, and Japan. Taken together, this Global Navigation Satellite System will provide geometric diversity with more than navigation satellites, all with triple frequency diversity for civil use. This paper will briefly describe the technology with a focus on safety of life applications.

Augmentation of a global navigation satellite system GNSS is a method of improving the navigation system's attributes, such as accuracy, reliability, and availability, through the integration of external information into the calculation process. There are many such systems in place and they are generally named or described based on how the GNSS sensor receives the external information. Some systems transmit additional information about sources of error such as clock drift , ephemeris , or ionospheric delay , others provide direct measurements of how much the signal was off in the past, while a third group provides additional vehicle information to be integrated in the calculation process. Satellite-based augmentation systems SBAS support wide-area or regional augmentation through the use of additional satellite-broadcast messages. Using measurements from the ground stations, correction messages are created and sent to one or more satellites for broadcast to end users as differential signal.

A-GPS: Assisted GPS, GNSS, and SBAS

A new approach to GPS positioning is described in which the post-processing of ultra-short sequences of captured GPS signal data can produce an estimate of receiver location. The algorithm uses a least-squares optimization to estimate receiver position and GPS time from measurements of the relative codephase, and Doppler-shift of GNSS satellite signals. Stationary device testing shows a median error of Results from deployment of this tag on adult Royal Albatross show excellent performance, demonstrating lightweight, solar-powered, long-term tracking of these remarkable birds. Tracking devices based on GNSS Global Navigation Satellite System are now commonplace, their many uses include wildlife tracking [ 1 ] and vehicle tracking [ 2 ]. Wildlife applications, in particular, are constrained by size and weight, and, until recently, GNSS devices have been limited to tracking animals such as moose [ 3 ] and marine species [ 4 ] capable of carrying a large receiver, limiting the range of species that can be tagged [ 5 ].

A GPS augmentation is any system that aids GPS by providing accuracy, integrity, availability, or any other improvement to positioning, navigation, and timing that is not inherently part of GPS itself. A wide range of different augmentation systems have been developed by both the public and private sectors. To meet specific requirements, the U. Although designed primarily for aviation users, WAAS is widely available in receivers used by other positioning, navigation, and timing communities. Return to top of page. The U.

Assisted-GNSS, Why, Where and for Whom?

1. Introduction
